Journal Club

Embedding the theory

Most people will know what a journal club is. For those who don't, it is a tried and tested way for people to learn together. It involves some predetermined reading (e.g., a journal article or a chapter from a book) that everyone reads in advance, and on the day there is a facilitated discussion about the piece. The focus is on diving into the theory and ideas, sharing insights, and discussing implications.

Case Formulation

Applying the ideas

These sessions create the opportunity to collaboratively develop case formulations. The focus is not on the case but more on everyone getting involved in formulating drawing on schemas, modes and so forth. This includes practising identifying schemas and modes. There may be an anonymised case to provide material to work with.

Skills Session

Practising the techniques

These sessions focus on creating a space where participants can practise Schema Therapy techniques together. It provides a safe and respectful place to practice new skills, which most people don't have otherwise. The specific techniques will be announced in advance, and participants have the option to play the role of a client and/or therapist. The session is facilitated and there is opportunity to give and receive honest feedback, as well as share thoughts about specific challenges in using the technique.

Peer Consultation

Discussing cases

Unlike the other sessions peer consultations give the opportunity to participants who would like to use the group as resource to present and consult on a particular client they are working with. This is agreed in advance, and guidance is given. Material is fully anonymised. During a peer consultation the participant presenting will share their formulation and the work they have been doing and identify what they are struggling with. Participants will actively be involved in sharing thoughts and ideas.
